A Cave Concert Experience
Presented by Samavesha

with
Kitka - Women's Vocal Ensemble
Exquisite Harmonies from Eastern Europe and Beyond
&
Laura Inserra - Renowned HANG Virtuoso

Featuring Temple of Poi

Saturday June 25th, 2011 9:30 pm
Hawk Hill Tunnel - Marin Headlands, Sausalito

Hawk Hill Tunnel is located in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA)

Join us for this special evening where hauntingly beautiful songs merge with otherworldly resonances. All this inside a tunnel that is transformed, for one night only, into an enchanted Cave.

Go here to buy tickets: http://caveconcert.org/Tickets.html

Advance tickets only. No tickets will be sold at the event.

Past Cave Concerts have always sold out, so please buy tickets in advance and don't miss this exciting opportunity.

This event marks the 9th annual Cave Concert, offering the public yet another magical sonic experience inside the Hawk Hill Tunnel. It is located on a bluff overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, providing breathtaking views of San Francisco and the Pacific Ocean. The tunnel itself was designed during World War II as an arms locker, but it has never been used for war purposes. It was later converted into a wildlife observation site where annual bird counts are held.

For the concert, one end of the tunnel is sealed off, transforming it into an incredibly resonant cave.

With lighting designed by John Coveney and expert artistic direction by Laura Inserra, this cave concert promises to be a truly enchanting experience. Passionate site-specific performances showcasing the haunting voices of KITKA and the ethereal sound of the Hang played by Inserra will create a powerful listening experience for audience members.

KITKA is a women’s vocal ensemble unlike any other. These sophisticated singers blend a contemporary sensibility with specialized vocal techniques from Eastern Europe that have been distilled over centuries. Using only the pure unaccompanied voice, they create a constantly shifting landscape of sound, pulsing with angular rhythms, where dramatic dynamics leap from delicate stillness to shattering resonance, and seamless unisons explode into lush incomprehensible chords.

KITKA's material ranges from ancient village duets to complex choral works, from early music to contemporary theater. The sound of their voices is exotic, elegant and eerie. The melodies are hauntingly beautiful. They sing in a multitude of unfamiliar languages, including Albanian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian, Georgian, Hungarian, Ladino, Latvian, Macedonian, Romanian, Russian, Ukrainian, Yiddish, and occasionally Latin, medieval Gallician, and ancient Greek. It is exactly this unfamiliarity that is so riveting, as KITKA’s sensitive precision lifts their work out of the merely musical into a universe beyond words, an experience that is primal, elemental.
LAURA INSERRA is a vibrant and talented composer, multi-instrumentalist, performer and artistic director. She is a classically trained musician with a strong improvisational background. A native of Sicily, her work is well known throughout Italy, and she has participated in the composition of numerous movie scores as well as the artistic direction of many innovative live productions.

Flame Effects for the Artist-July 9th and 10th. San Francisco CA

Closing a cross country mission to spread the fire we return to the Bay Area for the fourth and final Flame Effects for the Artist class of 2011.
Attention all artists who wish to incorporate fire aspects into their art! This class is for you…

Flaming Lotus Girls and The Box Shop team up to present this great 2-day workshop in flame effects in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The workshop will be teaching basic practices and principles for incorporating fuel based flame effects into your work. This class is great for the beginning fire artist and always has something new for the “expert”. Each one of these classes has drawn participants who have had all levels of experience. This has made for some great questions and projects that have been both fun and challenging.

The first day will consist of a classroom session where we will discuss subjects including:
NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines including NFPA 54 and 58 the LP gas codes.
NFPA 160 Flame Effects Before a Live Audience and other codes.
We will also examine the physical properties of LP gasses and get some hands on time with fittings and parts. Of course, we closely examine the wonders of LP gas with the amazing clear propane cylinder. We will then finish off by taking a look at some typical designs for Flame Effects including accumulators, free burning effects, fuel mortars, pilot lights, hot surface igniters and much more. We will have plenty of demonstrations and hands on materials.
The second day will be a shop day where we will put what we have learned into action and create a one of a kind flame effect from the materials on hand. The best part of the class is the assembly of the effect so please let us know if you have materials or elements you may like to see incorporated. This class will be fun for the artist who is thinking of incorporating a small flame element into their work, as well as the more experienced fire artist wanting to take their work to the next level.
Leading this weekend will be Dave X, Fire Safety Manager for Burning Man for more than 10 years, and Eric Smith, Chief Inspector for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP Gas. We will also have displays of fire art from several local fire artists!

The cost of this 2-Day class will be $120.
Both days’ classes will be from 10am – 5pm.
Printed materials and a crappy, but filling lunch of whatever cheap food we can get will be provided each day.

Come and join us for this weekend to hang out with other fire artists and have a blast, no pun intended. We have room for 40 and will be taking walk up registration the day of the event, space permitting. Email your name to Fuelmaster@gmail.com to register.

HI THERE BAY AREA FOLKS...PLAYA CHOIR SEEKS SINGERS! WE ALSO NEED RISERS-CAN YOU HELP??

I'm sending this post out to you with hope that someone in the area can give us a hand.

This is Madi, I direct the Playa Choir. For the last six years, the Playa Choir has been ROCKING Sunday mornings in Black Rock City, now with a choir over 50 voices strong. I can't really put into words the experience we have, but basically, as a choir director, this is the highlight of my year.

We had the pleasure last year of having a set of choir risers to uplift our choir. (Thanks DAN!) now that we've had a taste of what that miracle is like, we hope to find another set for this year. If you have any somewhat local access to some choir risers (like, 3-4 pieces) that could make it out to the playa to help get our singers visible and audible, please email me. Maybe you are a teacher at a school that has some risers, or part of a church organization, or you are in a choir and have access to some...

If you can help out at all, the choir will personally come and serenade your camp! (how cool would THAT be?)

PLAYA CHOIR INFO:

on Wed, Thurs, Fri and Saturday, we rehearse from 10:30 am-12:30ish. We prepare about 4 tunes, usually in the gospel style or close to that, and we sing in harmony. Then on Sunday at 11 am, we give this gift of music to a gathering of folks who come to listen, and to hear a playa-style sunday morning service. We sing, dance, cry, laugh, shout, clap, rock, and make music together...we uplift (if that is possible to lift most of us ANY higher than we already are on sunday morning at the burn) the congregation and leave feeling as if we were part of something really wonderful, something that only singing together at BRC can make you feel. not sure what thats like? come join us and find out!

we welcome singers of all levels.
If you read, we want you! If you don't, we want you!
If you have some choir experience, perfect. If not, that's ok too.
If you sing in a country band or in a church choir, please share!
If you sing in the shower, you can come AND not wear any clothes! (leave the bar soap at home, but bring a scrubby buddy, people get a little funky come saturday..)
If you are a background singer or you sing to your child/dog/cat/husband/wife/muse/gerbils, we want you!
If you've always wanted to sing but never had the guts to go for it, NOW IS YOUR TIME TO SHOW UP AND MAKE IT HAPPEN....!
Hell, if you are a pro singer, opera singer, rock star, jazzer, pop queen, crooner, karaoke junkie, torch singer, folkie, hippie, choirster, a cappella fanatic, barbershopper, broadway belter, WHATEVER,...we WANT YOU!

Our placement details are forthcoming, but you can plan on the following:

Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat rehearsal at 10:30 am
sunday morning service at 11 am.

WE NEED A RHYTHM SECTION, MEANING DRUMS, BASS, GUITAR AND ANOTHER KEYBOARD PLAYER TOO!!
please email me for more information and to let me know you are interested. I'll send you music ahead of time (to learn either by ear or by notes on the page) and keep you up to date on details on our placement.

I can be reached at:
madis_service@yahoo.com

here is some footage of our choir in years past!

Hope to see you at rehearsal!

love and dust,
